A study held in U.S. recently proved that children who face obesity and are overweight have a higher chance of developing asthma. Previous reports and cases reported depicted that obesity can be a major cause for asthma among older people but similar situation can even lead a child towards asthma. The study involved analyzing and testing the objective on almost 5 lakh children from the age group of two seventeen, out of which 8 percent of kids were diagnosed with asthma due to obesity. Children who possess unhealthy weight are 17 percent more at risk for asthma than the children with healthy weight. The study only includes results that were obtained through prescriptions of asthma drug and not through test including breathing test. Researchers looked into the objective and conducted the spirometry test to understand the link between obesity and asthma. The test was a carried out in an totally controlled environment to depict people how harmful extra can be in causing asthma, while Dr. Jason Lang from the Duke University School of Medicine in Durham situated in North Carolina and the lead author of the study stated that he totally agree with the reports as he himself has found major connections between overweight and asthma. Dr. Lang emailed saying that the experts have witnessed an unusual lung growth in overweight people that may cause obstruction in breathing. Obesity is also associated with many more health issues like increase of cholesterol, cardiovascular diseases and improper flow of blood sugar levels. The researchers declared that decrease in weight also decreases the chances of developing asthma. Almost 23 to 27 percent of recently reported cases of asthma among children can be traced back to the extra weight they carry. The doctors explained that if no child is obese asthma cases can be avoided till almost 10 percent. The only difficulty faced by researchers was that the results are driven from the medical records that were provided by doctors and thus they cannot decide whether obesity leads to asthma or asthma leads to obesity. But whatever may be the case DR. Deepa Rastogi, director of the Pediatric Asthma Center at Children’s Hospital situated at Montefiore in Bronx, New York exclaimed that maintaining weight can all over be beneficial for avoiding asthma among children as well as elders. An editorial published by Rastogi along with the study mentioned an Olympic level athlete who was diagnosed with asthma, but due to exercising regularly has managed asthma in a most effective manner. Young children suffering from asthma should be active and should not avoid any physical activity.
